World Handball Championship starts Tuesday, Croatia, Denmark and Norway hosts

ZAGREB, 13 Jan (Hina) - The 29th edition of the IHF World Men's Handball Championship starts on Tuesday and Croatia, Denmark and Norway are being the hosts of the contest with 32 national teams playing in the group stage.

This is the second time for Croatia to provide venues for the IHF World Men's Handball Championship, after in 2009 it was the sole host when the championship had taken place in newly built sports halls in Zagreb, Split, Varaždin, Osijek, Zadar and Poreč.

This year, during the contest that is being held from 14 January to 2 February, Croatia's part of hosting take place in the venues in in Zagreb, Varaždin and Poreč.

In Denmark, the venue is  the city of Herning and in Norway, the matches are in Bærum, a municipality in a wider area of Oslo.

At the previous World Championships, France were the most successful with six gold medals.

Sweden and Romania have four each, Denmark three, Germany, Russia, and Spain have two each, while Croatians have been so far the world champion once, and that happened in Portugal in 2003.

Croatia have so far bagged three silvers and one bronze medal at world championships.
