The value of China's exports rose 9.7 per cent in December 2014 compared to the same period in 2013, according to customs data released 13 January 2015, marking a strong end to a slower year in terms of international trade. The total value of the country's exports and imports increased by 3.4 per cent compared to 2013, falling short of the government's target of a 7.5-per-cent increase.
'A slowing recovery of global economy, weak domestic investment and demand, and falling commodity prices are the major reasons behind the weak foreign trade growth in 2014,' said China customs spokesman Zheng Yuesheng.
The government wants to encourage domestic consumption to rebalance the economy against a reliance on exports, but the latest figures indicate that exports continue to be a key driver of China's economic growth. EPA/QUILAI SHEN
