Over 40 exhibitors take part in international prosciutto fair in Tinjan

Autor: Marija Šestan

ZAGREB, 18 Oct (Hina) -  The 16th edition of the ISAP International prosciutto fair in the Istrian town of Tinjan, which began on Friday, brought together about 40 exhibitors from Croatia, Slovenia, Italy, Portugal, Spain and Montenegro.

Addressing the opening ceremony, Tourism Ministry State Secretary Monika Udovičić, who spoke as the prime minister's envoy, said that this fair is one of the events promoting Istria's rich gastronomic and cultural heritage.

She recalls that Croatia has 48 food and agricultural products with EU labels of protected designation of origin and protected geographical indication, ranking seventh among 27 EU member states.

The products with geographical indication such as Istrian prosciutto, the meat of the Boškarin (Istrian cattle), Istrian sheep cheese and honey are key to efforts to preserve local identity and boost the tourist trade, she added.

The head of Istria County's agricultural department, Ezio Pinzan, said that the municipality of Tinjan has grown into a centre of excellence for the promotion of Istrian agricultural produce.

The municipal head Goran Hrvatin said that during last year's fair, 23,000 visitors passed through Tinjan.

This year, the fair ends on Sunday.

On Friday, President Zoran Milanović visited the event.
