On Monday 13 May 2024, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) enacted a new rule, Order No. 1920, requiring transmission operators to update long-term transmission planning over a 20-year time horizon to anticipate future needs. Experts have consistently warned that the country is at a high risk of blackouts from extreme weather due to a lack of high-voltage power lines. This shortage of high voltage lines is also making it harder to shift to renewable sources of energy such as wind and solar. 'Our country is facing an unprecedented surge in demand for affordable electricity while confronting extreme weather threats to the reliability of our grid and trying to stay one step ahead of the massive technological changes we are seeing in our society,' FERC Chairman Willie Phillips said. 'Our nation needs a new foundation to get badly needed new transmission planned, paid for and built. With this new rule, that starts today.' EPA/ALLISON DINNER
