GERMANY MIGRATION
epa10935781 German police officers stop cars at a border crossing point between Germany and Austria in Walserberg, Germany, 24 October 2023. Austria and Germany have introduced temporary border controls to stem irregular migration. German Federal Police has apprehended 1,550 smuggling operations and around 1,700 smugglers across Germany so far this year, and has detected around 98,000 unauthorised entries into Germany, the federal interior ministry said. According to the authorities, smugglers repeatedly put refugees' lives danger during smuggling operations, for example during unsecured transport on loading platforms or in airtight lorries. On 13 October, seven people were killed, including a six-year-old child, in a serious traffic accident involving an overcrowded smuggling vehicle on the A94 motorway in Bavaria. EPA/Anna Szilagyi
