Abu Salah is among the some 150 Palestinians prisoners who were released by the Israeli army in coordination with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) through the Kerem Shalom crossing into Gaza. They had been arrested duirng the Israeli army ground incursion in the Gaza Strip. Sufyan Abu Salah told journalists present at his transfer to the hospital that "when he was arrested he was not suffering from any aliment and that his leg was amputated in prison after an infection and seven days without access to a medical treatment". More than 33,600 Palestinians and over 1,450 Israelis have been killed, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), since Hamas militants launched an attack against Israel from the Gaza Strip on 07 October 2023, and the Israeli operations in Gaza and the West Bank which followed it.
