The letter articulates that genital mutilation is punishable with prison terms in Germany and can lead to the cancellation of visas and foreign payments for family members and others involved. Federal Families Minister Giffey said the letter is an effort to intervene against the practice within immigrant communities in Germany as well as to give a measure of protection to immigrants in Germany visiting their countries of origin.
