German consumer confidence is set to climb to a seven-and-a-half year high next month as households in Europe's biggest economy shrug off worries about global tensions in the Middle East and Ukraine, a survey released 25 July 2014 showed. Expectations for rising wages will help to drive consumer confidence to a higher-than-forecast 9 points in August from a July reading of 8.9 points, the Nuremberg-based GfK research group said in releasing its forward-looking indicator. Analysts had expected the GfK indicator would hold steady at the July level. 'Despite the escalation in the situations in Israel and Ukraine, German consumers continue to be exceedingly optimistic this summer,' the GfK said.
Based on a survey of about 2,000 households, the August reading represents the indicator's highest level since December 2006. EPA/JULIANÂ STRATENSCHULTE *** Local Caption *** 02524072
