DIICOT prosecutors, assisted by riot police officers, carried out 84 searches in Bucharest on 23 November and four other counties to arrest members of the Caran Clan, targeted for cross-border criminal activities. The members of the mafia group nicknamed 'Caran' are being investigated by prosecutors in a case in which they are accused of forming an organized criminal group with the purposes of usury, blackmail, attempted murder, disturbing public order and peace, pimping, money laundering, giving and taking bribery, influence peddling, illegal organization of gambling, fraud, false statements, intellectual forgery, use of forgery, driving a vehicle without a driver's license and ill-treatment of a minor. The members of the criminal group were also accused of recruiting and harboring several women, to exploit them by forcing them to practice prostitution and other forms of sexual exploitation on the premises of a nightclub located in Bucharest, according to DIICOT. In the last months, Romania intensified the fight against corruption and cross-border criminal activities as the administration wants to secure the country's integration into the Schengen area.
