epaselect SOMALIA PHOTO SET GENDER AND CLIMATE CHANGE
epaselect epa11206415 Hajira Adan Okash, a woman who is internally displaced due to climate change, is seen walking within the Ladan Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Ladan, on the outskirts of Dollow, in Jubaland state, Somalia, 30 January 2024 (issued 08 March 2024). Somalia is an example of how societies hit by climate change can also become less safe for women and girls. Across the country, recent extreme climate shocks like drought and floods have displaced millions of people, most of them women, who are then more exposed to hazardous environments and, therefore, different forms of gender-based violence, including sexual assault. At the same time, the struggle to access growingly scarce resources worsens existing power imbalances between women and men in a deeply patriarchal society. The gendered dimension of climate change, however, hasn't yet been fully tackled due to a lack of systematic data and because of cultural obstacles. Some initiatives try to find a remedy like this saving group promoted by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), where around 30 women organize to create a common fund and support its members in launching small businesses. Also, safe spaces in the camps aim to provide a channel for women to speak out and report their abuse. EPA/Daniel Irungu ATTENTION: This Image is part of a PHOTO SET
