Medjimurje celebrating centenary of its reintegration into Croatia

Author: Marija Šestan

ZAGREB, Jan 5 (Hina) - The northern Croatian county of Medjimurje is holding commemorative events this week to mark the 100th anniversary of Medjimurje's secession from Hungary and its reintegration into Croatia.

On 9 January 1919, an assembly of local deputies decided to secede Medjimurje from Hungary and the decision was made in the presence of 10,000 people who gathered in the Franciscan Square in Cakovec on that occasion. The region joined the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes which was later called Yugoslavia. Upon the adoption of the resolution on secession, the Croatian language was introduced in schools and the public life in the area mainly populated by Croats.

On the centenary of Medjimurje's reintegration into Croatia, exhibitions, concerts and other cultural events are being held in the county seat of Cakovec.
