380,000 tonnes of still usable food wasted annually in Croatia

Author: Marija Šestan

ZAGREB, Sept 5 (Hina) - According to findings of a study made by the European Commission, approximately 380,000 tonnes of food, which is still usable, are thrown out in Croatia annually, and across the EU food waste reaches 88 million tonnes a year.

These figures were presented in Osijek on Wednesday at a panel discussion on a project dedicated to global learning approach on food waste in non-formal education.

The project coordinator for Croatia, Tanja Popovic-Filipovic, said that in Croatia 53% of food waste was generated by households and the remainder by stores and hospitality industry.

According to statistics, one-person households are the biggest generators of food waste, followed by persons who live in urban areas, families with higher incomes and those with small children.

The target set by the European Commission is to reduce food waste by 50% by 2030.

An assistant minister at the Croatian Agriculture Ministry, Jelena Djugum, said some headway had been made, such as a rise in the value of food donations of 1.5 million kuna in 2017 from 2016.

She explained that food donations could be used for tax deduction.

The project on global learning approach on food waste is co-funded by the European Commission and the Croatian government's office for non-governmental organisations.
