Each Croatian first grader to be given honey jar this autumn

Author: Marija Šestan

ZAGREB, Aug 9 (Hina) - Croatian primary school pupils will be taught about the importance of honey in their food during the upcoming school year and each first grader is to get a jar of Croatian honey in December, according to a blueprint of the plan for promotion of honey produced by local beekeepers.

The plan is aimed at improving the position of Croatian honey on the national market, according to a press release issued by the Agriculture Ministry.

A total of two million kuna will be set aside for its implementation and of that amount HRK 1.2 million is to be allocated for the "School Honey Day", which will be observed on 7 December, the day of Saint Aurelius Ambrosius, the patron saint of beekeepers and bees.

On that occasion, a 370-mililitre glass jar of Croatian honey will be given free of charge to each first grader.

In addition, an event called "the honey breakfast from Croatian apiaries" will be organised for the purpose of promotion of local honey.

The Croatian Beekeeping Union will also receive grants for the supply of glass jars for donated honey.

In 2015, Croatia had 11,500 registered beekeepers who produced 7,000 tonnes of honey a year.
