The ceremony was attended by senior state officials and the singer's family and friends.
Speaking to the press before the service, Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic said that Oliver Dragojevic's departure was a great loss for Croatian culture, music and society. "He was the soul of Croatia. What he gave to many generations of people in the last half-century has marked us all, it is part of our identity, our emotions and our formative years," Plenkovic said. "He was a great man and this is the least we can do for him today," he added.
President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic said she is sad today because a person who marked her whole life and childhood, with whose songs she grew up and sometimes cried to, who meant so much to Croatia, has passed away. "With his unique Dalmatian sound and his personality, Oliver united Croatia and its diaspora. I will miss him very much," she said.
Parliament Speaker Gordan Jandrokovic said: Oliver Dragojevic was a "great artist who attracted people with his humanity, kindness and warmth. We all respect him as an excellent musician whose songs have marked our lives."
The government has declared Tuesday a national day of condolence.
Oliver Dragojevic will be buried in Vela Luka on the island of Korcula on Wednesday.
