Over a billion euro available to Croatia for water management projects

Author: Marija Šestan

ZAGREB, July 2 (Hina) - About EUR 1.05 billion has been put at Croatia's disposal for water management projects until 2023, it was said at a conference on water as the most valuable resource in the future, which was held in Zagreb on Monday.

Assistant EU Funds and Regional Development Minister Dragan Jelic told reporters that 1.05 billion euro from the European Funds were available to Croatia in the period from 2014 to 2023 for water supply and wastewater projects.

Jelic said that Croatia considered water purification projects one of its priorities.

The state-run water management company's director-general Zoran Djurokovic said that there was still much work to be done concerning wastewater treatment, having in mind the fact that now only 35% of wastewater was collected, treated and discharged properly in the country.

Djurokovic said that wastewater treatment systems in the country should be upgraded and that currently 50% of the Croatian population were connected to sewer systems.

As many as 60 wastewater treatment plant projects are currently underway, encompassing over 3,000 kilometres of sewerage grids plus 200 kilometres of water supply pipelines and completion of those projects is expected by 2023.
