The president of the HSU, MP Silvano Hrelja, said approximately 50,000 people in Croatia live "trapped in their apartments because they don't have an elevator."
"There are people who live on third or fourth floors who haven't left their apartments in years to take a stroll around the city or visit their children or grandchildren. This is a complex problem, but now we have an opportunity (to do something) thanks to the money available to us from the EU funds, which we must not miss out on," Hrelja said.
Croatian MEP Biljana Borzan of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) said this problem was an important topic for the life of all citizens, young and old.
She called on pensioners' associations to continue exerting pressure on the relevant ministry.
