HSU urges government to use EU funds to install elevators in residential buildings

Author: Ivana Tomičić Šušak

ZAGREB, March 23 (Hina) - Installing elevators in multi-level residential buildings with the help of EU funds can be useful not only to the residents of those buildings but also to firemen and ambulance workers, the Osijek branch of the Croatian Pensioners Party (HSU) and pensioners' associations said on Friday, calling on the government to include these projects in the Operational Programme Competitiveness and Cohesion.

The president of the HSU, MP Silvano Hrelja, said approximately 50,000 people in Croatia live "trapped in their apartments because they don't have an elevator."

"There are people who live on third or fourth floors who haven't left their apartments in years to take a stroll around the city or visit their children or grandchildren. This is a complex problem, but now we have an opportunity (to do something) thanks to the money available to us from the EU funds, which we must not miss out on," Hrelja said.

Croatian MEP Biljana Borzan of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) said this problem was an important topic for the life of all citizens, young and old.

She called on pensioners' associations to continue exerting pressure on the relevant ministry.
