Fair promoting products from Croatian islands taking place in Zagreb

Author: Marija Šestan

ZAGREB, March 7 (Hina) - As many as 24 farmers and agricultural producers from the islands of Hvar, Brac, Vis, Dugi Otok, Ugljan, Prvic, Krk, Rab, Pag, Korcula, Lastovo and the peninsula of Peljesac are promoting their products and services at the ongoing fair of island products in Zagreb's main square.

The fair, which was formally opened by Regional Development Minister Gabrijela Zalac and Mayor Milan Bandic on Wednesday, will run through 14 March.

The fair is part of the project promoting the designation "Croatian Island Product (HOP)". To date, the HOP designation has been awarded to 880 products of 279 manufacturers doing business on 24 islands and the peninsula of Peljesac.

Croatia invested 1.7 billion kuna in the developments of its islands in 2016, which was 200 million more than the average annual investment in the islands in the previous 20 years. Of the 1.7 billion kuna invested in the islands in 2016, 1.3 billion accounted for grants, and 432 million kuna were loans approved by the Croatian development bank HBOR.

Croatia has 78 islands, 524 islets and 642 reefs in its part of the Adriatic sea. Of those islands, 50 are permanently or occasionally inhabited.
