Croatia's mountainous areas gripped by snow, extremely low temperatures

Author: Marija Šestan

ZAGREB, Feb 26 (Hina) - The Croatian mountainous regions of Lika and Gorski Kotar have been struggling with inclement weather and freezing temperatures for a few days and volunteers and Red Cross activists are currently trying to reach isolated households with elderly inhabitants to provide them with food and medicines and help them with firewood supplies.

There has been heavy snowfall in Gorski Kotar in the past few days, including 150 cm recorded in Delnice. All services are on the ground and have been helped by over 300 army members with 30 vehicles to clean the snow since Thursday.

In the wider Gospic area, volunteers have been visiting about 80 isolated households.

Snow-covered roads and wind gusts have been impeding traffic through those areas and cargo vehicles are currently banned from travelling along motorways through the central and mountainous areas of Croatia. The Croatian Automobile Club (HAK) reported on Monday morning that due to bad weather all traffic was suspended along motorways sections in Lika and the Dalmatian hinterland.

The national weather service (DHMZ) has issued warnings about wind gusts and sleet along the coast and also on islands as well as about temperatures going to - 10 degrees Celsius.
