PM announces priorities of Croatia's Council of Europe presidency

Author: Vojo Micak

ZAGREB, Feb 6 (Hina) - The fight against corruption, decentralisation, protection of minorities and promotion of culture will be the priorities of the Croatian presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic announced in Strasbourg on Tuesday after meeting with the organisation's Secretary General Thorbjorn Jagland.

Croatia takes over the six-month rotating presidency at the end of May in Copenhagen, and today's meeting was an opportunity to discuss the forthcoming assumption of that duty, Plenkovic said.

He said that the Croatian presidency would focus on four priority areas: the fight against corruption, issues relating to decentralisation, protection of minorities and their rights, and issues relating to culture, cultural heritage and cultural assets.

Plenkovic said that a number of events and conferences would be held in Zagreb, Strasbourg and elsewhere to address these issues. Some of them will be organised in cooperation with the United Nations in New York.

Plenkovic said he was pleased that Secretary General Jagland has accepted his invitation to visit Croatia, which is expected within the next two months.
