Addressing a crowd, Deputy Mayor Srdjan Milakovic, who was elected to that position designated for the representative of local ethnic Serbs, extended his best wishes for Christmas and New Year, which will be in a week's time.
Milakovic expressed hope that handing out meatless meals on the occasion of Christmas Eve according to the Julian calendar in the centre of Vukovar would become customary.
"All residents are welcome and we want the public space in the centre of Vukovar to assume features of multiculturalism and multi-confessional characteristics," he added, recalling that the custom of distributing meatless meals on the occasion of this holiday started last year.
On Saturday evening, local Orthodox believers will hold Christmas Eve Fast suppers and set to fire oak branches in front of their churches and their houses.
Also in the seaport of Rijeka, 1,500 fish meals were handed out on Saturday to mark Christmas Eve according to the Julian calendar. The distribution was organised by local ethnic Serb associations.
