Austrians love Snow Queen slalom races

Author: Hari Alfeo;Marija Šestan

ZAGREB, Jan 2 (Hina) - Austrian skiers have been the most successful to date on Mount Sljeme's Red Slope overlooking Zagreb which will host the best women slalom skiers for the 12th time, and the best men slalom skiers for the ninth time, as part of the FIS Ski World Cup on Wednesday and Thursday.

Of the 19 Snow Queen Trophy slalom races held to date, Austrians have won eight, scoring eight second and third places as well.

Among women, the best has been Marlies Schild of Austria, with four victories, while the best among the men has been Marcel Hirscher, also of Austria, with three wins. Another Austrian, Mario Matt, won in 2008. The French, Italians, Finns and Americans have scored two victories each, and the Swedes, Slovaks and Germans one each.

Interestingly, no Croat skier has won in the 11 women's and eight men's Snow Queen Trophy slalom races held to date. Of the men, Ivica Kostelic finished second in 2008, 2009 and 2011, and third in 2012. Of the women, Ana Jelusic finished second in 2007 and Janica Kostelic third in 2006.

The Ladies’ Slalom 1st run start is scheduled for 13 hrs on 3 January and the second run is to start at 1630 hrs. The Men’s Slalom 1st run start is scheduled for 1245 hrs on 4 January, and the second run is due to start at 1630 hrs.

The 2018 Snow Queen Trophy slalom race will be inaugurated by Wendy Holdener of Switzerland.

The competition has been taking place since 2005.

"That year the Croatian Ski Association (HSS) organised the first ladies’ World Cup slalom race, turning Zagreb into an unavoidable stop of the World Cup calendar. In 2008, a men's slalom race was introduced and since then the Snow Queen Trophy races have been among the most watched World Cup races," the organising committee boasts on the official web site.
