ZAGREB, Oct 28 (Hina) - There are 2.7 credit and debit cards per capita in Croatia, with 92% of Croatians owning at least one card while 50% have three or more cards, according to a survey conducted by Mastercard which also shows that online shopping in Croatia is on the rise, as is the number of mobile payment transactions.

The 2017 Masterindex, the first Mastercard survey of consumer trends in e-commerce and new payments in Europe, was conducted by Mastercard in cooperation with the GfK market research centre on a sample of 1,020 banking service users in Croatia, aged between 18 and 55.

The aim of the Masterindex is to gain insights into the state of e-commerce, one of the pillars of the Digital Single Market, in over 20 countries across the European Economic Area (EEA).

The survey shows that the use of cards is increasing with the level of education and purchasing power and they are used more by respondents over 40. Male respondents tend to use cards more than female respondents.

The use of contactless cards has significantly increased; 68% of the respondents complete their transactions with contactless cards, while in October 2016, 53% opted for that method of payment. In October 2015, only 36% of people used contactless cards.

As many as 84% of card users shop online, as against 81% in October 2016. The most active online shoppers are those between 30 and 39 years of age with university education.
