Croatia won't be cleared of mines by end 2019, extension of deadline to be requested

Author: Roberta Mlinarić

ZAGREB, Oct 16 (Hina) - Croatian Mine Action Centre (HCR) director Zdravko Modrusan has said that Croatia will not be entirely free of mines left over from the 1991-95 war by the end of 2019 because mine clearance funds are not arriving at the required pace, adding that a procedure will be launched in the EU to move that deadline, set by the Mine Ban Treaty.

Modrusan made the statement on Monday while signing an agreement on a HRK 100,000 donation by Sisak-Moslavina County to remove mines from an area of 9,731 square metres in Petrinja, a town in Sisak-Moslavina County.

Modrusan said that EU funds were being increasingly used for mine clearance and that this year they accounted for 62% of the overall mine removal funding.

In line with the Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and on their Destruction, or the Mine Ban Treaty, Croatia has undertaken to destroy, by 2019, all anti-personnel mines in mine-infested areas under its jurisdiction or control.

In Sisak-Moslavina County, 73 square kilometres of land remain suspected of being infested with mines.

Lika-Senj County is the only county more infested with mines than Sisak-Moslavina County.
