Cravat Day day festival starts in Zagreb

Author: Ivana Tomičić Šušak

ZAGREB, Oct 13 (Hina) - Apart from the central celebration marking World Cravat Day, Academia Cravatica this year for the first time organises a festival dedicated to the most ubiquitous of modern accessories -- the necktie, which started on Saturday.

Academia Cravatica presents Croatia as the homeland of the cravat, a piece of cloth worn around the necks of Croatian soldiers and the "Croata" brand.

Academia Cravatica is a nonprofit institution which preserves and improves the cravat as a part of Croatian and world heritage.

The festival will be held in Zagreb on October 14-18 and it will include a series of activities and programmes celebrating the cravat as tangible Croatia's, but also European and world's heritage. The objective is also to present Zagreb as the world capital of the necktie.

Croatia claims to have pioneered the cravat. In fact, the world "cravat" and "Croat" are etymologically linked, according to the Oxford English Dictionary. The cravat came to Western Europe in the 17th century, courtesy of Croatian mercenaries.

In 1997 the non-profit Academia Cravatica was founded "to spreading the truth about the cravat".

At the same time the organisation recognises the role of the French people in the history of the cravat, who had recognised this ornament on Croatian soldiers and the role of the English people who had spread it across the world and the role of other nations which had embraced the cravat.

Cravat Day is observed on October 18.
