Bosnia to begin exporting poultry to EU soon

Author: Snježana Pezer

ZAGREB, Oct 9 (Hina) - Bosnia's Minister of Trade and Economic Relations, Mirko Sarovic, on Monday confirmed that the country has been given preliminary approval by EU bodies to begin exporting poultry products to the EU and that exports could start as of next year.

Sarovic confirmed that Croatia would in fact be the main market where producers from Bosnia plan to market their products.

"Croatia was our main market before and our products are highly valued there," Sarovic said.

Bosnia and Herzegovina wasn't able to freely export agricultural and food products to Croatia after Croatia joined the EU and since then Bosnia has been required to apply for special approval by the European Commission for exports after it meets strict criteria.

Bosnia has managed to obtain approval to export only milk and dairy products, and once again Croatia is its main market.

A special EC delegation for food and health visited Bosnia and Herzegovina in September to inspect production methods at poultry farms and the country's quality control system, and consequently issued a positive preliminary report.

Bosnia expects a positive final official report within the next month, after which it can begin exporting poultry products as of 2018.
