The survey, based on interviews with about 22,000 residents of Croatia aged 15 and over, shows that Croatians spent six nights per trip on average, spending about 2,000 kuna per trip, or 346 per day.
Some 1.6 million Croatians, or 44% of the population aged 15 and over, made 3.8 million private multi-day trips last year; 2.5 million trips were made in Croatia, and the most popular foreign destinations were Bosnia and Herzegovina, Italy, Germany, Austria and Slovenia.
Croatians spent 6.5 billion kuna on private multi-day trips, including 3.3 billion abroad and the rest in Croatia. On those trips, they generated 23.1 million bed-nights, of which 17 million in Croatia and 6.3 million abroad.
Croatians generated 7 bed-nights per trip in Croatia and 5.2 bed-nights per trip abroad, and in 37.4% of cases they stayed in unpaid accommodation with their relatives and friends.
They mostly travelled to visit their relatives and friends or to spend their holidays on the Adriatic coast.
The survey also revealed that about 2 million people or 56% did not go on multi-day trips last year. Most of them, 62%, cited lack of money and some cited health reasons and family obligations.
EUR 378 mn spent on business trips
Last year 318,000 Croatians made 784,000 business trips and spent 2.8 billion kuna, including 2 billion kuna abroad and 807 million in Croatia. On average, they spent 600 kuna per day in Croatia and 854 kuna per day abroad.
In 2016, Croatians also made 6.8 million day trips, including 6.1 million private trips and 765,000 daylong business trips.
