The installation marked International Plastic Bag Free Day, July 3, urging the government to implement the necessary measures in dealing with the problem of the excessive use of plastics and the problem of plastic waste disposal.
ZA activist Marko Kosak said that every Croatian used 400 plastic bags on average annually, adding that Croatia was required by EU rules to reduce this number tenfold. He said the EU average was similar to Croatia's, but that some countries, such as Finland, had reduced the annual use of plastic bags to 90 bags per inhabitant, while Ireland had reduced their use by 90 percent.
"Only this year, after two years' delay, has the government transposed the EU plastic bags directive into national law, but nothing has changed in the field. We want the Environment Ministry to urgently start implementing measures to encourage the production of linen bags and discourage the use of plastic bags," Kosak said. He called on plastic bag producers to repurpose their production and thus follow the global trend.
