Fewer Croats granted German citizenship; more Brits want German passport

Author: Snježana Pezer

ZAGREB, June 13 (Hina) - Last year about 3,000 fewer Croats were awarded German citizenship than in the years since Croatia joined the European Union, in mid-2013,  while the number of Brits applying for a German passport has drastically increased, the German Federal Statistical Office reported on Tuesday.

"In 2016, 2,985 Croatian citizens were granted German citizenship, 10.3% fewer than the year before that," the bureau reported.

Even though the number of naturalised Germans from Croatia is falling, it is still relatively high compared to the period prior to Croatia's accession to the Union.

In 2012, ahead of Croatia's accession, the number of Croatians who became naturalised Germans was just 544.

In 2013 that number increased significantly to 1,721 and in 2014 it reached its peak with 3,899 being granted citizenship. In 2015 that number dropped to 3,328 and continued falling in 2016.

The increased demand for German citizenship can be explained by the fact that Germany allows dual citizenship and applicants do not have to renounce their original citizenship.

The dramatic increase in the number of Brits applying for German citizenship is interesting. Last year, 2,865 Brits were granted German citizenship, 360% more than in 2015.

"The number of citizens of the United Kingdom who were naturalised as German citizens increased in particular, which suggests some link with the Brexit issue," the Office (Destatis) said on its web site.

Last year a total of 110,383 foreigners were granted German citizenship, the largest single group of immigrants receiving citizenship come from Turkey.
