Outpatient clinic for internet, video games addicts opens

Author: Snježana Pezer

ZAGREB, April 10 (Hina) - An outpatient clinic for treatment of growing incidence of dependency on the Internet, video-games and gambling was opened on Monday in the Sv. Ivan psychiatric hospital in Zagreb.

The hospital's director, Igor Filipcic said Croatia was following European and global trends with the increase in the number of people affected by the addiction to the virtual world, computer games, social networks and the Internet which they cannot deal with on their own. He underscored that the problem of dependency was not just the problem of the individual concerned but their families and society too. Treatment last from one month to three months.

"Addiction to the Internet is a broad notion which include games, various content, including those that are inappropriate, but also online shopping. It is without a doubt that addicts withdraw within themselves in time, they associate less and unfortunately, in the Far East there have been cases that ended in deaths," Filipcic said.

He said that the outpatient clinic aimed at avoiding the stigmatisation of patients. They are not hospitalised but come in the morning and spend the day in therapy.
