Croatian MEP says Sava must be protected, its potential utilised

Author: Hari Alfeo

ZAGREB, March 29 (Hina) - Croatian member of the European Parliament Ivan Jakovcic has said that the European Union's strategy for the Adriatic-Ionian region made it possible to realise protection and development projects for areas along the Sava river, Jakovcic's office said in a press release on  Wednesday.

He co-organised a seminar at the EP at which a white paper on the Sava was presented yesterday.

The protection and exploitation of the Sava's resources is a typical example of a region in which the EU's macro-regional strategies can and must show their full efficiency. The countries through which the Sava runs are covered by the EU's Danube strategy and Adriatic-Ionian micro-region strategy. This means we already have a mechanism for stimulating and financing many projects in environmental protection, tourism, transport and energy infrastructure, Jakovcic said.

As the EP's rapporteur on the Adriatic-Ionian macro-region, he called on the participants in the seminar as well as national, regional and local governments in countries along the Sava to propose projects for the preservation and development of the region.

Such projects must be environmentally friendly and contribute to the satisfaction of citizens living along the Sava, Jakovcic said.

Slovenian MEP Igor Soltes, who co-organised the seminar, said projects for utilising the river's potential must be aligned with the highest environmental protection standards.
