Declaration on Croatian language key moment in struggle for Croatia's cause, says Kusic

Author:

ZAGREB, March 16 (Hina) -  The adoption of the Declaration on the Status and Name of the Croatian Standard Language by Croat scholars in 1967 was one of the crucial moments in the struggle for Croatia's identity and marked the beginning of the end of tragic Croatian illusions of Yugoslavia and the Yugoslav idea, Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts (HAZU) head Zvonko Kusic said Thursday on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the adoption of that document.

"For centuries the Croatians preserved and defended their language and fought for its public use," the academician said.

The establishment of a free and independent Croatia enabled them to accomplish that goal, he added.

Nowadays, the Croatian language is exposed to globalisation challenges and to futile efforts to deny its existence. Nevertheless, Croatian is the official language in Croatia and one of the official languages in the European Union, Kusic said adding that the Croatians should be proud of that success.
