Hungarian-Croatian and Croatian-Hungarian dictionaries presented

Author: Snježana Pezer

ZAGREB, March 8 (Hina) - The "Hungarian-Croatian Dictionary" by Kresimir Sucevic Medjeral, Tatjana Vukadinovic, Irina Jurovic and Margit Bernadett Vuk and the "Croatian-Hungarian Dictionary" by Ernest Baric and Janja Prodan are of lasting value for both nations and foundation stones for even better relations between the two countries, it was said at a launch on Wednesday at the Hungarian Institute in Zagreb.

State-secretary in Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban's office, Csabo Latorcai, conveyed Orban's greetings and recalled the centuries-long Hungarian-Croatian relations.

During eight centuries, with certain disputes, Hungary's history was Croatia's history too and Croatia's history was Hungary's too, Latorcai said and added that the EU could learn a lot from the common Croatian-Hungarian history through Croatian ban Nikola Subic Zrinski.

He underscored that recent researches showed that Hungary had good relations with its neighbours and added that the most positive relations exist with Croatia, Slovenia and Austria.

The director of the Croatian Language Institute, Zeljko Jozic, underscored that these two dictionaries are foundation stones for even better Croatian-Hungarian cooperation.

The director of the Croatica in Budapest, Csaba Horvath said the dictionaries are a lasting value for both nations and represent a special cultural event for the Croatian community in Hungary.

The "Hungarian-Croatian Dictionary" is an important means for maintaining the identity of ethnic minorities in Hungary and Croatia. The dictionary consists of 38,000 words. This is the first major contemporary Hungarian-Croatian dictionary prepared by Hungarian and Croatian linguists.
