Minister: Hrvatske Sume is also responsible for developing timber sector

Author: Marija Šestan

ZAGREB, Feb 24 (Hina) - Agriculture Minister Tomislav Tolusic said at a session of the Wood-Processing Industry Council in the northeastern town of Virovitica on Friday that the state-run forest management company Hrvatske Sume was responsible not only for the preservation of biological diversity but also for the development of the timber sector.

During the meeting, Hrvatske Sume CEO Krunoslav Jakopcic and the HGK Croatian Wood Cluster head, Danijel Smiljanic, signed amended agreements regulating their business cooperation.

Forests cover 47% of land in Croatia, spreading over 2,688,687 hectares. The state owns 78% of forests and 22% are privately owned. In Croatia, as much as 95% of forests grow naturally, and interventions are done only when natural regeneration is not possible, for instance after fires or due to sanitary logging.

The wood-processing sector employs over 53,000 workers and accounts for 3.6% of GDP and for 10.4% of exports.
