National and University Library Day marked

Author: Ivana Tomičić Šušak

ZAGREB, Feb 22 (Hina) - National and University Library (NSK) Day was marked in Zagreb on Wednesday with a reception attended by presidential envoy and MP Irena Petrijevcanin Vuksanovic, Science and Education Minister Pavo Barisic and state secretary at the Culture Ministry Ivica Poljicak.

Petrijevcanin Vuksanovic said the NSK was a symbol of historical, national, cultural and language identity. She underscored that technology was not the enemy of the book but a means to connect the modern and the traditional.

NSK Day is marked on February 22 because on that day in 1483, only 28 years after the completion of Gutenberg’s 42-line Bible, the first Croatian printed book, Misal po zakonu Rimskog dvora (the Missale Romanum Glagolitice), saw the light of day. It was the first missal in Europe not printed in the Latin script thoroughly documenting the social, economic, cultural and intellectual circumstances of Croats in the second half of the 15th century, Minister Barisic said.
