Social development must be based on social justice, solidarity, equality and righteousness among all countries and within each country, the NHS said, adding that this included the right to dignified work, salary and working conditions, equal pay for men and women doing the same job, non-discrimination on any grounds, equality and equal availability of all public services
The NHS cited figures from a study drawn up by Oxfam, an international confederation of charitable organisations focused on the alleviation of global poverty, that eight men now control as much wealth as the world's poorest 3.6 billion people. The men -- Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, Carlos Slim, Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg, Amancio Ortega, Larry Ellison and Michael Bloomberg -- are collectively worth $426 billion, according to the anti-poverty group's report which also notes that over the past 25 years, the top 1% have gained more income than the bottom 50% put together.
According to the NHS, the poverty risk rate in Croatia exceeds 20% and 29% of Croatians are at risk of poverty or social exclusion. Official statistics show that more than 9,000 workers in Croatia do not get paid for their work but the real number is higher because the statistical methods do not cover all workers.
Approximately 75,000 workers in Croatia work for a minimum wage of HRK 2,620 or less, the number of jobless people exceeds 240,000 and only 16% of them receive some kind of unemployment allowance, so most of them are forced to accept undeclared employment in order to survive, the NHS said.
