Rijeka won the Green Digital Charter award in competition with Amsterdam and Valencia, the city administration said in a statement.
The aim of the iURBAN project is to promote energy efficiency in cities, and it has been implemented in Rijeka since 2013. The project covers various types of structures, such as buildings, street lighting and heating plants. The information gathered serves as the basis for the design of an IT solution that will guide the city administration towards better energy efficiency, according to the statement.
The EUROCITIES network, founded in 1986, brings together the local governments of Europe's 130 largest cities and 35 partner cities across 35 countries. It represents the interests of its members and takes part in dialogue with European institutions on policies relating to cities, including economic development, environment, transport and mobility, social issues, culture, information and knowledge, and services of general interest.
The cities signatories to the Green Digital Charter have undertaken to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by applying information and communications technologies.
