Japanese Ambassador to Croatia Keiji Takiguchi said at the ceremony that Japan-Croatia relations were good but that there was a lot of room for their further development. He also underlined an increasing number of Japanese tourists visiting the Adriatic coast.
"The Split region is an important destination for Japanese tourists and our honorary consulate in this city will in the future be at their service, Takiguchi said.
The ambassador also said that each year approximately 600 Croatian seamen find employment in Japanese shipping companies, which also contributed to the strengthening of the two countries' economic ties.
More than 200,000 Japanese tourists visited Croatia last year, it was said at the ceremony.
Vidopivec said he was honored to be appointed Japan's honorary consul.
The Japanese Honorary Consulate in Split was opened in November 2016 and it has the jurisdiction in four Adriatic countries -- Split-Dalmatia County, Sibenik-Knin County, zadar County and Dubrovnik-neretva County.
