Last week the Slovenian government sent a bill on aliens into parliament and if the bill receives the support of two-thirds of lawmakers, the police will have the power to reject asylum applications at the border while migrants who cross the border illegally will be deported. Unaccompanied migrant minors and the disabled will be excluded from these measures.
The telephone poll conducted last week on a sample of 504 respondents shows that 86% support the government's intention to amend the law on aliens.
Nongovernmental organisations and human rights organisations consider that rejecting asylum seekers at the border is a violation of European laws for international protection and international conventions of the rights of asylum seekers with 22% of those surveyed agreeing, however 47% consider these criticisms are unfounded.
With regard to what is more important during security threats and mass migration trends - freedom or security - 54% said that both were just as important, 36% consider security to be more important while 9% believe that freedom is more important.
Parliament has put the bill on its agenda for its next session scheduled for next week.
