71% of Croatians visited their GP in one year

ZAGREB, Jan 8 (Hina) - The results of a European Health Survey for 2014-2015, which examines the health of citizens, indicate that in the past 12 months 71% of Croatian citizens visited their general practitioner, 46.9% visited a specialist, 44.3% visited their dentist and 10.6% were hospitalised, the Croatian Institute of Public Health (HZJZ) has said presenting the findings.

The survey covered 5,446 Croatian citizens and the results indicate that in the past two weeks 47.7% of citizens took medication prescribed by a doctors, more women than men, and that 31% took non-prescription drugs, herbal medicines or vitamins.

As far as prevention is concerned, 74% said they had never received a flu vaccination, 57.6% had measured their blood pressure in the past 12 months and about 50% checked their sugar and cholesterol levels.

Also, 35.5% of women between the age of 50 and 64 years had a mammogram, 45.7% had a pap smear test, while only 13% of respondents aged 50-70 checked for blood in their stool.

"About 68% of the population consider their health to be good, but we also have a large percentage of people who consider their health to be poor or very poor, particularly those over the age 65," said Vlasta Deckovic Vukres of the HZJZ.

She added that Croatia had a high level of obesity in comparison to other European countries. with a high percentage of obese men (45.9%) and 20% overall.

The survey was conducted between April 24 to March 2015.
