Eco-friendly organic farming in Croatia rising

Author: Ivana Tomičić Šušak

ZAGREB, Nov 28 (Hina) - Ecological farming in Croatia has been growing over the past several years, Assistant Agriculture Minister Zdravko Barac said on Monday, at the Eco Farming forum, organised by the Croatian Agriculture Agency in Zagreb.

The share of the ecological farming in the overall agricultural production is rising, and the total organic area converted to organic production has increased by five times over the past five, six years, Barac said.

According to him, last year state subsidies have been paid out for more than 75,000 hectares of farmland, while figures for this year are still coming in, but according to estimates subsidies will be paid out for nearly 90,000 hectares.

According to the figures provided by the EU statistical office (Eurostat), in 2010, Croatia's organic area was 16,000 hectares to rise to almost  76,000 ha in 2015, a rise of 377 percent.

Clearly, this is an ascending trend and statistics show that the consumption of eco products is also growing, Barac said.

Jadranka Boban Pejic of the bio&bio company said that Croatia's ecological products markets is worth approximately 90 million euros which places Croatia in a group of countries with the annual growth of 20%.
