In the first ten months of 2016, compared with the same period in 2015, the number of road fatalities was down by 26 persons or 9%. At the same time, the number of seriously injured decreased by 43 persons or 1.8% and that of slightly injured by 270 persons or 2.6%.
Of the total number of fatalities, 169 (64%) died on the site of the accident, 18 (6.8%) died on the way to hospital, and 77 (29.2%) died within 30 days of the accident.
The number of scooter and motorcycle drivers and car passengers killed in traffic accidents fell considerably, while the number of fatalities among motorcycle passengers and pedestrians increased.
The largest number of road fatalities was recorded in the summer months. Broken down by type of accident, most people were killed in head-on collisions, followed by those killed in cars that skidded off the road, in collisions with pedestrians, and in side-impact collisions.
Speeding was the cause of as many as 40% of fatalities, followed by violations of traffic regulations, and failure to give way.
In the first ten months of this year, two children were killed as pedestrians. By comparison, in the same period of 2015 three minor drivers, four passengers and two pedestrians were killed. The number of children killed in road accidents in 2016 was 77.8% lower than in 2015.
A total of 682,582 traffic violations were recorded in the reporting period. Almost 40% of them concerned speeding, 11% involved failure to put on the seat belt, 8.9% related to the disregard of traffic signs, 5.1% concerned drunk driving and 4.5% involved mobile phone use while driving.
