10th International Prosciutto Fair opens

Author: Hari Alfeo

ZAGREB, Oct 15 (Hina) - The 10th International Prosciutto Fair ISAP was opened in Tinjan, Istria on Saturday, featuring 43 exhibitors, five more than last year, from Croatia, Austria, Slovenia, Italy and Spain.

This year's partner country is Italy, which is displaying prosciutto ham from Langhirano near Parma and from Padua.

Tinjan Mayor Goran Hrvatin said the fair was visited by prosciutto lovers from Croatia and neighbouring countries, including over 20,000 last year.

Agriculture Minister Davor Romic said Tinjan brought together prosciutto, tradition and tourism. He recalled that 14 Croatian products had been protected to date and that applications had been submitted this year for another 14. He said Croatia could not compete in high production but could in the added value of autochthonous products. He also underlined the importance of linking agriculture and tourism.

Tourism Minister Anton Kliman said the ISAP fair was one of several events in Istria promoting a native product. He said the aim in tourism was to have a complete product and that it was not possible without Croatian enogastronomic products, which was why the tourism and agriculture ministries had formed a task force for the promotion of a Croatian breakfast.

Istria County Prefect Valter Flego said Istria wanted to protect its tradition and identity and be recognisable not only for its olive oil and tourism, but prosciutto and other autochthonous products as well.
