Croatian cities organise public health drives to mark World Walking Day

Author: Roberta Mlinarić

ZAGREB, Oct 2 (Hina) - The public health drives "Walking to Health" and "Volunteers in the Park" were held in Zagreb and several other Croatian towns on the occasion of World Walking Day on Saturday.

The drives are part of the national programme "A Healthy Life", launched in 2003 by the Croatian Public Health Institute and the Health Ministry with the aim of promoting healthy lifestyles and reducing the incidence of chronic non-infectious diseases.

World Walking Day is marked every year on the first weekend of October and this year it was marked with a walk around Zagreb's Lake Jarun, educational play activities and play activities for pre-school and school children that encourage motor development, anthropometric measurements and counselling about physical activity and proper nutrition.

Activities covered by the national programme "A Healthy Life" are aimed at improving the health of the entire population and informing and educating, through work in the local community, citizens in all age groups about the positive aspects of healthy lifestyles.

The programme has five components - health education, health tourism, health and nutrition, health and workplace, and health and the environment -  and they all consist of individual projects.
