Downtown Zagreb without cars on European Car-Free Day

Author: Snježana Pezer

ZAGREB, Sept 21 (Hina) - To mark European Car-Free Day, September 22, downtown Zagreb will be shut to all motorised traffic from 8 am to 8 pm.

Zagreb's city elders have decided that traditionally that day, all traffic will be banned in the downtown area with the exception of ambulance cars, fire trucks, police cars, utility vehicles, vehicles driven by disabled drivers who live in the inner city, taxis. The city authorities urge citizens to be patient that day.

A traditional bike rally will be held, starting at 11 am from one of Zagreb's downtown squares and ending on the banks of the Sava River.

European Car-Free Day marks the end of European Mobility Week, which is aimed at promoting activities against environment pollution caused by increased motorised traffic in urban centres and is traditionally held from September 16 to 22. The theme of this year's mobility week is 'Smart mobility. Strong economy.'

European Mobility Week is organised by the European Commission with the aim of improving the quality of life and is particularly focused on reducing environment pollution and promoting public transport, cycling and other forms of sustainable mobility in urban centres.
