The value of this investment was HRK 493 million.
The construction of the 15 kilometre canal is part of a national irrigation programme adopted in 2005. Works on the project began in 2009.
Recalling projects from Croatia's past designed to drain farmland, Hrvatske Vode water management company director Zoran Djurokovic said this was the "first time that we are releasing water in Slavonia in order to assist stable agricultural production."
Environment and Nature Protection Minister Slaven Dobrovic said that the construction of the canal met all ecological standards and that the canal would have a positive impact as the fresh water delivered from the Sava River would improve the chemical composition of local waterways, affected by lack of sufficient quantities of water.
