SMEs make up lion's share of businesses in Croatian real sector

ZAGREB, July 18 (Hina) - In the real sector in 2014, there were 147,337 active businesses employing 999,419 people, and 99.7% of them were small or medium-sized enterprises or micro businesses, according to figures provided by the national statistical office (DZS).

All those 147,337 businesses operating in the industry, construction and trade generated a turnover of 569 billion kuna in 2014, and made the additional value in the amount of HRK 155.9 billion, according to the DZS.

Broken down by size, of those 147,337 businesses, 99.7% were SMEs, including micro businesses.

Micro business is generally defined as a small business employing nine people or fewer. Small businesses are privately owned corporations, partnerships, or sole proprietorships that employ between 10 and 49 workers, and medium-sized business can have between 50 and 249 people on their payrolls.

In 2014, those businesses employed 69.7% of all employees in the real sector, and generated over a half of the total added value (57.3% of HRK 155.9 billion).

Broken down by type of business, the most significant branch was the manufacturing industry, with a 25.5% share in the employment and 22.7% in added value in the real sector.
