Several hundred people jump into Drava as part of Big Jump campaign

Author: Vojo Micak

ZAGREB, July 10 (Hina) - Several hundred people jumped into the River Drava near the northwestern town of Varazdin at 3pm on Sunday as part of the Big Jump campaign, joining thousands of Europeans who did the same throughout the continent to show that they cared for their rivers and lakes.

This year's campaign, like the previous eleven, was organised by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), the European Rivers Network and local partners.

"We have been waiting for too long for modern approaches to the management and protection of European rivers and that's why the Big Jump is organised as a clear call by people from throughout Europe that they want their rivers and lakes back in clean and healthy condition," said Branka Spanicek of the WWF Adria.

The main Big Jump event in Croatia was organised in Varazdin, and similar events also took place by the River Drava at Legrad, Sveta Marija, Kriznica and Kopacki Rit.

The Big Jump campaign marked the culmination of the celebration of the Amazon of Europe Day, which is observed on the second Sunday in July and is dedicated to the future transboundary UNESCO biosphere reserve Mura-Drava-Danube. It also marked the fourth anniversary since UNESCO declared the Mura-Drava-Danube biosphere reserve in Croatia and Hungary part of the world natural heritage.
