Croatia boasts of rich water resources ahead of World Water Day

Author: Marija Šestan

ZAGREB, March 21 (Hina) - World Water Day will be observed under the motto "Water and Jobs" on 22 March and the Croatian water management company Hrvatske Vode has underscored that nearly a half of 1.5 billion workers worldwide are employed in water-related sectors.

The company recalls that Croatia is among those countries relatively rich in water resources.

According to the findings of a survey conducted by UNESCO in 2003, Croatia ranked fifth in Europe according to water availability and resources and was 42nd on the world’s water ranking list.

The Croatian underground water resources are estimated at some 9.2 billion cubic metres. Of that, 4 to 5 per cent (400 million cubic metres of renewable water supply) is used for providing water supplies annually.

All natural and artificial streams in Croatia are some 32,000 kilometres long on the aggregate.

Currently, 85% of the country's population is connected to public water supply systems, and this is to be raised to 95% in the next investment cycle, according to the national company.

In 1993, the United Nations General Assembly introduced 22 March as World Water Day in order to highlight the priceless importance of water as well as as to warn about dangers of water pollution and limited water supplies.
