Railway traffic between Croatia and Hungary re-established

Author: Roberta Mlinarić
ZAGREB, March 8 (HIna) - Railway traffic between Croatia and Hungary was re-established on Tuesday, Croatian Railway (HZ) reported, adding that the Koprivnica-Gyekenyes border crossing was the first to be reopened.
The railway border crossing Beli Manastir-Magyarboly is still closed.

The Croatian and Hungarian foreign ministries said in a joint statement on Monday that the decision to re-establish railway passenger traffic between the two countries was the first indicator of improving bilateral relations after the new Croatian government took office, noting that ahead of the two countries were a number of important development projects.

Croatian Minister of the Interior Vlaho Orepic said after returning from his talks with his Hungarian counterpart Sandor Pinter in Budapest that Croatia had taken a direction of new, sincere relations with Hungary.

The border crossings Murakeresztur - Kotoriba, Gyekenyes - Koprivnica and Magyarboly – Beli Manastir were closed in mid-October last year because of the refugee crisis, after a large number of migrants entered Hungary via those crossings en route to Germany.

In late 2015, Hungary set up a fence along its southern border with Serbia and Croatia to prevent the migrant entry.
