USS Harry S. Truman sails into Split

Author: Roberta Mlinarić
SPLIT, Dec 5 (Hina) - The USS Harry S. Truman, a 100,000 tonne US Navy vessel with a carrying capacity of 85 planes and about 20 helicopters, on Saturday morning sailed into the Brac Channel and moored about two kilometres from the Split City Port, where it will stay until December 9 as part of a visit to Croatia.
A reception for the press was held on the aircraft carrier in the afternoon.

The Croatian Defence Ministry said in a statement the visit by the US Navy vessel confirmed the close relations between Croatia and the USA in ensuring and maintaining security and prosperity in the region and was an indicator of their rich and intensive cooperation.

The USS Harry S. Truman is part of the US 6th Fleet, based in Naples, Italy, which runs and participates in a number of joint naval operations with allies and partners contributing to security and stability in Europe and Africa.

This Nimitz-class aircraft carrier is 333 metres long, 41 metres wide and has a 12-metre draft. It has a crew of 4,922, including 487 officers, the ministry said.

The vessel has been in operation since 1996. It is a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier the size of three football fields.

The USS Harry S. Truman and other Nimitz-class aircraft carriers have two Westinghouse nuclear reactors that enable them to develop a speed of slightly more than 30 knots (about 56 kmph).

In 2006 the Split port was visited by the USS Enterprise, in 1979 it was visited by the USS America and in 1976 by the USS Saratoga.
